Ammonia is a dangerous nitrogen compound that can seriously harm pond fish. Fish respiration and the decay of organic matter such as excess food and dead leaves produce ammonia. Run off from surrounding terrain may introduce compounds that contain or disrupt biological filtration and result in toxic ammonia levels.
The presence of ammonia in a pond can be a serious problem and requires prompt attention. Generally, the amount of ammonia should not exceed 1.2 mg/L. At a concentration of 1.2 mg/L, with an alkaline pH value of 8 or more, the amount of NH3 (the toxic form of ammonia) is significantly high and can be toxic to aquatic organisms.
Weekly testing of ammonia levels is recommended and will help indicate whether the biological filter in the pond is effectively eliminating ammonia. With the Laguna Ammonia Test Kit you can easily and accurately measure the ammonia levels in your pond water.
Laguna Ammonia Test Kit includes everything you need to do 70 tests: one 18 mL bottle of ammonia reagent, a test tube with cap, apipette, a lab base, and an instruction leaflet. |
